Need As African-Americans, we can help each other lead healthier, more productive lives. Take this opportunity to learn the facts about organ and tissue donation. FACT: Many African-Americans in our community are waiting for organs and tissues. FACT: We suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure at alarmingly high rates and are more likely to experience kidney failure. FACT: Our kidney recipients have better results with kidneys donated by other African-Americans because of a special tissue-type match found only in us. FACT: The gift of organ, cornea, and bone donation can save lives, restore sight, save limbs from amputation, and offer patients, such as those on kidney machines (dialysis), a greatly improved quality of life. FACT: The quality of care received in the hospital will not be affected. Only after all lifesaving measures have been taken will donation be discussed. FACT: As African-Americans, we have the unique opportunity and responsibility to help each other. |
